Visual Arts Online Department Head

Mariana Carreras

Mariana grew up in South America, in a small country called Uruguay about 12,000 miles south of Tucson, by the Atlantic Ocean. Her family emigrated when she was 16, to Miami, Florida. After Mariana finished high school, she enrolled in Miami-Dade Community College, where she was privileged to study with some outstanding and inspiring faculty. She was working full-time, and getting her degree took 3 years, but I had a goal of graduating with a strong GPA and Honors in order to transfer with a scholarship. ‍ Mariana did and eventually transferred to George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. At GW she earned her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts Drawing/Painting, with a Minor in Art History. After graduating, she was awarded a Fellowship at George Washington and remained there until finishing her Master Degree in Painting.

Mariana loves many mediums, but she specializes in oil paintings. After finishing her degree she visited Tucson, and was attracted to the small valley surrounded by hills and the slower pace of the West.

Upon arriving, she opened her Art Studio and began teaching at Pima Community College, back in the year 2000. She loves creating and she also love teaching. Mariana hopes her enjoyment of art and reverence for the creative process will be contagious. She has a young daughter and a small little dog. She enjoys many things in life, but most precious in her list are family and friends, nature, hikes, yoga and traveling around the globe, looking at art and painting.
